The maritime state of Maharashtra has a tradition of seafaring and fishing along its 720 km long coastline. The State annually contributes about 5.0 lakh tons of fish from the aquatic resources. Considering the importance of fisheries, the State Government of Maharashtra established a College of Fisheries under Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Agricultural University (Dr. B. S. K. K. V.), Dapoli in the year 1981. Although the State has four agricultural Universities, Dr. B. S. K. K. V. alone has created an independent and full-fledged faculty of Fisheries and this is the only College in the State where undergraduate fisheries educational program is implemented. The annual admission capacity is 40 for B. F. Sc., 6 for M. F. Sc. (Aquaculture), 6 for M. F. Sc. (Fish Processing Technology)6 for M. F. Sc. (Fisheries Resource Management and Extension Education) and 3 for Ph. D. (Aquaculture).

The College of Fisheries is located at village Shirgaon on the outskirts of Ratnagiri city. The University admits students on State-level basis for the UG and PG programmes in fisheries science. The brief details of the college are as follows:

  Library Information  
 

Library is situated on ground floor in the main building of College. Library has a Book section, Periodical section and Reading room. Night library facilities are also provided to the students. A separate post of Assistant Librarian is created for the Library The books available in thelibrary are classified under22headsfortheuseofstaffandstudents. The library holdings inform of books has shown a gradual increase with the available financial assistance from the Council under Central Assistance.The total book holdings of library on various topics are 6247 . In addition to books library has 3600 numbers of back volumes of periodical. At present 10 Indian and 10 foreign journals are subscribed. Computerization of the Library information system is underway, presently with NATP assistance.

The Local Area Network ( LAN ) for the entire College building and the ARIS unit has been established. The LAN has nine segments comprising of Associate Dean’s office, Six academic Departments, Library and ARIS unitl. Presently it is fully operational and in regular use by the staff and students of the College. The Dial – up Internet connection (  Modem facility ) fort he ARIS cell has been procured from the Department of Telecommunication, Ratnagiri . Internet browsing and E – mail facilities are regularly utilized by Faculty members and students. In addition to this a CD-ROM Server has been installed in the library for browsing the database CDs. This facility is also utilised by the staff members and students of college specifically by Post-Graduate students.

  Hostel Facilities  
 

Hostel for boys is situated in College campus itself. There are two hostel buildings. In new hostel building there are 16 rooms in which 50 students are accommodated, whereas in old hostel there are 8 rooms with an accommodation capacity of 32 students. Common mess facility with dining hall is situated in new hostel building. Students operate the mess on co-operative basis. Twenty seats are reserved for newly admitted students of First year B. F. Sc. Admission in the hostel is provided on the basis of merit. Each admitted student is provided with one study table, rack, cupboard, and chair and steel cot.In addition to this the hostel building is provided with 24 hours computer and Television facilities for learning and entertainment. Common telephone facility is also provided.

At present there is no separate building for girls hostel. However facilities have been provided in staff quarters building. Intake capacity of girls hostel is 20 of which 8 seats are reserved for newly admitted first year girl students. Admission in the hostel is provided on merit basis. Each admitted student is provided with one study table, rack, cupboard, and chair and steel cot.In addition to this hostel building is provided with 24 hours computer and Television facilities for learning and entertainment. 

 
  Laboratory facility  
 
Each department is provided with laboratory which is constructed and fabricated as per the requirement of individual department. In addition to this a Central Instrumentation Cell is also established to cater the required needs of different departments. A. Wet laboratory for aquaculture is created in separate building within the campus of College to conduct the experiments of the aquaculture department.. Student Computer laboratory is also established in the Department of Fisheries Resources, Economics, Statistics and Extension Education to conduct computer courses of undergraduate and post-graduate. A. Post-graduate Research Institute of 3,300 sq ft work place is established at the Marine Biological Research Station at Ratnagiri and is fully utilized by the M. F. Sc. students.
