  4. Distance between plants and rows – 2.7 X 2.7m both ways. It could be adjusted on contonors.
  5. Depth of sowing/planting – The same depth of planting should be maintained as it was either in poly bag or nursery bed.

  Type of soil

Type of soil, upland low land . Coastal sandy soil and peat soil rich with humus are best suited. Interior red and uplant (Varkas) soils supplement with organic matter are also useful. Soil depth (at least one metre) and good drainage is essential.

  Package of practices

  Preparatory

Remove stubbles, bolders, cutting and filling be done on undulating sites; planting the wind breakers all along perifery of field; orchard, confirm the lay out and dig the pits of 60x60x60cms at specified spacing; allow the exposed pit to dry in intense sun and burn with dry grass. Fill in with FYM + soil + phosphatic fertilizer + insecticide dust.

  Planting

At the onset of monsoon when showers become stable, in low lying area planting could be delayed. Seedling planted in the centre of pit to collar depth. The soil around should be well pressed. No water lodging tolerable.

  After care

Sanitation – Weed removed frequently

  Intercrops

Prebearing period – Ananas, papaya, banana, Amorphophallus, sweet potato, variety of vegetable crops.

  Post bearing

Black pepper

Apply additional dose of nutrition and irrigation

  Care during nursery stage

  Selection of seed nut

only from the selected mother palms, well matured.

  Nursery planting

Raw method in well prepared beds and nurturing of one metre breadth and convenient length, richly supplied with organic manure and basal dose of phosphatic fertilizers. Nuts buried vertically 10 cms below soil layer. Apply judicious and timely irrigation through out nursery tenure.

  Screening of seedling
Early germinated having 5 disease free dark green broad and short leaves, vigorous growing of 12-18 month aged.

Seed rate/ha or No. of grafts/ha

1350 – 70 Seedlings/ha. are accomodated.

  Seales

Sucks the rap from husk, nut become under sized and drop down.

  Control

Dimethoate (30%) or Mathion (50%) spray.

  Diseases

  Koleroga

Results in severe fruit drop

  Control

Spraying one per cent Bordeaux with sticker or coc formulation (50%) at the on set of Monsoon. Three to four sprays during rainy season.

Application of 0.3% Aliator through roots first application before monsoon and four during the season.

  Anabe disease

It is root rot, results in death of palm

  Control

Effective drainage; Root application of 2% Bordeaux or 0.3% Hexacap or 0.3% Brassical. Ten to fifteen litres of solution, first pre monsoon and remaining two during season.

  Band

Short stature, dark green, brittle leaves; decline in fruiting efficiency

  Control

Effective drainage
