One of the hot spots of Biodiversity, Western Ghats, runs along the Konkan Region. Out of its total length of 1600 kms, about 700 kms belongs to this region. At Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Agricultural University, Dapoli, the work on conservation of Plant Biodiversity of Western ghats is in progress in Forestry Research Farm. Around 50 hectares of land is being earmarked for this purpose. So far, 85 different forest tree species, 92 different medicinal plant species, 13 bamboo species have been planted. Besides this emphasis is also being given on conserving endangered species. Particularly, the Konkan region is a storehouse of medicinal plants and hence, more importance is given to conservation of medicinal plants.
