  Other Research Activities - Pulses

Konkan region is known for its rice cultivation during Kharif season. Due to high rainfall it is not possible to cultivate other important crops like pulses during kharif season. Most of the pulses are grown on residual moisture. The common pulse crops grown in the Konkan region are cowpea, lablab bean, horse gram and moth bean.

Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Agricultural University, Dapoli initiated the research work on these pulses since 1974 and released high yielding varieties in the region. The university released varieties “ Konkan Sadabahar” and “Konkan Safed” of Cowpea and “Konkan Wal-2” of lablab bean.

Konkan sadabahar is short duration (55 to 65 days), small grained, high yielding (10q/ha) and suitable to grow through out the year. This variety is very popular in Konkan region and in Western Maharashtra.

Konkan Safed is bold grained cowpea variety, grains are white. It matures in 75-80 days and grain yield is about 12-13 q/ha.

The variety Konkan Wal-2 matures in 40-45 days and yields about 10q/ha. The variety is drought tolerant and yields well under residual moisture condition.
