Other Research Activities - Seed Production Program
Crop varietal improvement program for cereals, pulses and oilseeds was executed during last 30 years on priority basis by this University. At present the University has developed over 33 varieties of cereals, pulses and oilseeds.
To produce a large quantity of hybrid seed, a systematic hybrid production program is implemented by the University. First rice hybrid “Sahyadri” has been developed and released by University. Considering the area under rice, the University has, so far, produced seeds of different varieties released by itself as under:
Breeder Seed
: 1576.75 quintals
Foundation Seed
: 17983.82 quintals
Truthful Seed
: 2940.00 quintals
Large scale seed production of ragi and vari, wal, cowpea, horse gram and vegetables like Okra, Chili, Tomato, Gourds etc. and forage crops is also undertaken by this University.
